Meditation for the Family

An alternative way to get organized

If your family life is chaotic with packed schedules, social media, and streaming the latest drama series, then your family might benefit from meditation. Meditation can decrease the feeling of overwhelm in your life, and help your family get better organized. How does sitting quietly have anything to do with conquering the paperwork covering your kitchen counters or putting the toys away?

Meditation:

  • Slows you down
  • Helps you concentrate and make decisions
  • Improves your mood
  • Soothes anxiety

What is great about meditation is there are several ways to practice it such as mindfulness and guided meditation. The various tools and resources that I have used to incorporate meditation in my life are:

Books

Growing Up Mindful: Essential Practices to Help Children, Teens, and Families Find Balance, Calm, and Resilience, by Christopher Willard, PYSD

I love how this book offers great advice to parents who want to incorporate mindfulness practices into their family and everyday life.

Videos

On YouTube we usually search for “kids sleep meditation” and find many guided sleep meditations that help my kids relax when their minds are still racing. Be careful though, it can work well on you too! Our favorite:

Calming Bedtime Aid for Children, by Moshi Twilight Sleep Stories

Apps

InsightTimer (library of guided meditations)

10% Happier (teaches you how to meditate and make it a habit)

Stop, Breathe & Think (recommends mindfulness and meditation practices based on how you are currently feeling)

I have used a combination of these tools to improve my focus, sleep better, and generally feel more energized throughout my day. All of these improvements help me have more clarity and desire to improve my surroundings. Have you tried meditation lately? If so, please share how it has improved your life.
